Microcrystalline cellulose and carboxymethylcellulose sodium is white or almost white, odorless, tasteless hygroscopic powder, containing 5-22% sodium carboxymethylcellulose. It is dispersible in water, organic hydrocolloid. Microcrystalline cellulose and carboxymethylcellulose sodium are used for the production of thixotropic gel and act as a carrier in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic preparations. Sodium carboxymethylcellulose in the form of a dispersion can act as a protective colloid. At a concentration of less than 1% solids it creates dispersion liquid forms, while at concentrations more than 1.2% solids, it forms a thixotropic gel. When properly dispersed it forms stable emulsions, serves as a stabilizer of suspensions. Used in the production of nasal sprays, aerosols, lotions, oral suspensions, emulsions, creams and gels.
